Financial Advisor Job Requirements
Is this a realistic career choice? [in banking]?
I am in high school and I think I want to be a investment banker or a financial advisor for a firm like Wells-Fargo or something. Obviously this isn’t a job that you can be super passionate about like being a doctor because you are actually saving lives or something; to be honest the salary attracted me to this.
Our family knows this family whose son is in his late 20s and he is being promoted to VP of a Wells Fargo…he only has a bachelor’s from a state college. He is currently doing his MBA BUT I did check requirements for a job and such a high level job needs an MBA.
Anyway, do you think it is a practical career for me?
My mom who is a psychologist said that it wouldn’t be so practical since its so competitive…but then again so is every job.
Also, if you know what its like to be one I’d like to know
First of all, banking is something you can absolutely be passionate about. And while you may not be saving lives like a doctor does, you can certainly save lives indirectly. A fellow manager for a bank I worked for once had a homeless man standing outside his branch begging for money. The manager took him inside, had him open an account, and had him check in once a week to make sure the money he panhandled was deposited and growing. Then he pushed him to apply for labor jobs, and eventually the man was able to get a place to live and is doing ok. Imagine if he hadn’t found a banker who cared?
Being an investment banker or FA is a good career, but is difficult to get going. Investment firms are always willing to hire young people with good work ethics and great sales skills. You’ll need to spend some time studying to get your Series 7 license, then you will spend A LOT of time cold calling rich people and selling your services until you build up a decent sized portfolio. From then on it is easier because your book will grow through referral business, and you can take on bigger and bigger clients and also manage your own team. With an MBA, you could also move up into executive management.
Hope this helps!
