Financial Advisor Boston University

Trouble finding a job in sales/marketing/business?

I will be graduating from a large, fairly competitive university with a BA in communication. I have a 3.5 gpa and have done 2 marketing internships. Including one in the marketing communications department of a Fortune 500 company. Should I be concerned about finding an entry level marketing, financial advisor, or sales position upon graduation? Or what other careers would suit my degree and earn some decent coin? Preferably in a large city NYC, Boston, L.A….

A Financial Advisor position is fairly easy to come by. In NYC there is AXA, Smith Barney, Morgan Stanley etc.. To become a Financial Advisor (atleast the process I went though when I looked into it) is you go for a preliminary interview they tell you about the company and what is expected of you. You than take a math test which involves discounts on premiums, interest etc.. If you pass and are still interested you come back for a phone interview. You call into an outside company and you go through scenarios of trying to sell them something. If you pass that you have an interview with the hiring manager who will want to see your marketing plan etc.. At the end of the day although you work for a company you are working on your own and marketing is very important.

Marketing is a little more difficult to get into and does not pay quite as well. NYC, Boston and LA are homes to the large advertising firms, which pay a little better than marketing. I grew up in Boston and lived there for 25 years and now live in Jersey so I know the market in Boston and Jersey (NYC) is competitive for any job.

If you want to get into Sales, I recommend Pharmacutical sales. Many of the major drug companies are located in New Jersey (a short ride from NYC) and pay quite well. You will spend your day visiting doctors telling them about new drugs, studies etc..
